In the first couple of months of 2017, we decided to try to convert the damp, dirty, dark concrete shed behind our rental house into a space where we could practice (and maybe teach) rope. It was a lot of work, but the results were worth it.
Here’s how it started:
Gross, right? So, here’s what we did:
- Scrubbed the walls, ceiling, and floors with soap and water
- Repaired the floor by filling in gaps and extending the concrete
- Painted everything white with Kilz primer
- Built two wooden suspension frames (low because of the low ceilings, but useable)
- Added decorative lights on the ceiling and hung a few curtains
- Lined the floor with puzzle-piece foam mats
It took us about a month, working mostly on weekends, to complete the work. The total cost was about $800 or so, which we paid for out of pocket and then recovered using the payments from our next round of classes.
And here’s the final result:
It has become a helpful, useable rope space for practices, hang-outs, and our Rope Study classes and workshops.
